Welcome to the MIT PSG Wiki - Homepage of the MIT Pagan Students' Group

The MIT Pagan Students' Group is a support network for Pagans in the MIT community. We welcome MIT students, employees, family members and anyone else in the MIT community with an interest in Paganism. In addition to organizing meetings and hosting rituals, we work to improve the image of Paganism in our community. Paganism is an affirmation of the beauty and sacredness of life on this earth, and of our unity with it.

The MIT PSG is also an informal collection of Wiccans (ranging from hierarchical rigid traditionalists to radical separatist feminists), Discordians, Pantheists, Shamans, Taoists, and those still searching for a path. The group is open-minded enough for people interested in Paganism as a personal religious phenomenom, as a broad political agenda, or as anything in between and beyond.

To see what is going on at the PSG, please take a look at our Current Events!

You can also take a look at our Planned Events, browe our Past Events, or take a look at our Library.

The MIT PSG office is in Walker Memorial in room 50-318.

We are now on Facebook and Twitter.

Ave. on the side opposite the MIT entrance with the pillars and walk west, away from the pillars, towards dorm row -- the chapel will be on your left. If you get to Kresge Auditorium (the building that looks as if you could ski off it), you've gone too far. If you notice a large inflatable grub-like thingy to your left, you have definitely gone much too far.

The MIT Pagan Students' Group invites you to attend its annual Samhain ritual on Friday, November 11, at 8 pm in the MIT Chapel.

This is an open public ritual. It is intended both for those curious about Paganism and for practicing Pagans. All participants are equally welcome. Please arrive on time -- late arrivals are disruptive to the ritual and will not be admitted.

Samhain (pronounced SOW-in) is the Celtic New Year -- a celebration of the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. Samhain is when we say our good-byes to those who have died and to things that have ended. It is a time to acknowledge endings and to look forward to new beginnings.

This year we are having late Samhain and also celebrating the numerology of 11/11/11. If you would like to take a more active role in the running of the ritual, let us know and we’ll assign you a role.

Participants are invited to bring burnable tokens of remembrance of those who have gone before. There will be a place in the ritual to leave these; they will be ritually burned and buried by the Priestess and Priest after the circle.

We will be having live percussion by Martin Case and Eran Shaysh.

The Rising of Sothis, the Star of Isis

Sothis

Come celebrate the rising of Sothis, Star of Isis! For the ancient Egyptians, the "return" of Sothis (also called Sirius, the Dog Star) was related to the Isiac myth cycle and corresponded to the inundation of the Nile, a crucial occurrence for this agricultural society. The rising of Sothis corresponds with the heat of summer, abundance and joy. This is a festival for connecting with the heart and soul of Isis as the Mother of All Things and for encouraging an expansive, loving energy within ourselves. Whether we’re experiencing good times or not-so-good times, this ritual can help to heal old wounds and remind us of the plethora of opportunities for growth and fulfillment that surround us. As symbols of our work, participants can bring a white candle for blessing and will receive a small vial of Nile water.

Participants who would like to witness the actual rising of Sothis should follow the directions below, "How to Find Sothis". See also directions below for a brief ritual for "Honoring the Rising of Sothis."

This ritual will be presented by Luna from Lap of the Goddess Productions and will be similar in style to the Navigium Isidis as presented by LOTG in March 2010.

Co-sponsored by Pagan Awakening and MIT Pagan Students' Group.

How to Find Sothis (also called Sirius)

In mid to late summer, Sothis can only be seen in the early morning before dawn. In order to witness the rising of Sothis, awaken before the sun is up and look towards the southeast. Sothis will be the brightest star in the sky. If you see a star low in the east just before dawn, it could be Venus. Sothis will be higher, brighter and further south.

Honoring the Rising of Sothis

Once you locate the star, begin to slowly raise your arms in a stance of adoration and invocation. If you have a rattle, shake the rattle as you raise your arms. Let the energy build within you as you sense the heat and energy of the return of the Soul of Isis. Once you feel complete with that, raise up a white candle and light it, chanting, "Isis Sothis!" Take some time to meditate. Bring this candle to our ritual, for further blessing. Or, if you can’t get up in time to see the rising of the star, bring a white candle anyway and follow the directions above sometime this summer.
